Bij het ontvangen van een internationale gast, is het prettig als u deze in correct Engels te woord kunt staan. Met de uitdrukkingen uit deze woordenlijst maakt u een goede en professionele indruk.
Receiving visitors and offering hospitality
- Mr/Mrs … is expecting you. He/She'll be with you in a few minutes.
- Can I take your coat?
- Would you like to take a seat while you're waiting?
- Can I get you something to drink – coffee, tea or a cold drink?
Language Problems
When you don't understand
- I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't understand (at all).
- I don't know what ... means. (You really don't know.)
- I don't know what you mean by .... (You think you must have misunderstood.)
- Just a moment, please. What (exactly) does ... mean? to check
- I didn't catch/follow that (completely). Could you just go over it again?
- What do you mean?
- I'm not with you. informal
- You've lost me. informal
Asking the other person to repeat
- I beg your pardon? formal
- Pardon?
- I'm sorry what did you say?
- Could you just repeat that, please? you want everything repeated
- Could you just repeat (the figures/the dates/your fax number/ ... ) please?
Saying what you need
- Could I just have a minute, please? (You want a pause to think/write/...)
- Could you speak more slowly, please?
- Could you spell (your name/address/company name/ ... ), please?
- How do you pronounce your name?
Explaining your language problems
- I'm afraid I don't know the English word for ….. Can you help me?
- I'm afraid I can't explain very clearly in English. (But I'll do my best.)
- Have I made myself clear? gives the other person a chance to check with you
- I think you must have misunderstood me. the other person seems annoyed or confused
